Commission Calculator

Commission is the piece of a sale that goes to the person who made it — the backbone of pay for field sales, insurance agents, brokers and channel partners. A flat rate keeps the maths transparent: a fixed percentage of everything you sell. This page computes that percentage, folds in any fixed incentive, and reports the effective rate on sales so two differently structured offers compare honestly.

How is the Commission calculated?

Enter the sales amount the commission is calculated on, the flat rate percentage, and any fixed incentive — a joining bonus, a per-deal flat fee or a monthly target bonus — paid on top. The calculator returns the commission itself, the total payout once the incentive is added, and the effective rate, which expresses that whole payout as a percentage of the sales you generated. With zero sales the effective rate shows a dash, because any percentage of nothing is undefined rather than zero.

Formula

commission = sales × rate ÷ 100
total payout = commission + fixed incentive
effective rate = total payout ÷ sales × 100

where:
sales = sales amount the plan pays on
rate = commission percentage (5 → 5%)
fixed incentive = extra amount paid regardless of rate

Tiered plans — 3% below target, 5% above — are just this formula applied to each slab.

Example

Sales: ₹50,000 · Rate: 5% · Fixed incentive: ₹2,500
Commission = 50,000 × 5 ÷ 100 = ₹2,500
Total payout = 2,500 + 2,500 = ₹5,000
Effective rate = 5,000 ÷ 50,000 × 100 = 10%
Double the sales to ₹1,00,000 and the same plan pays ₹5,000 of commission plus the ₹2,500 incentive — ₹7,500 overall — so the fixed component shrinks as a share of earnings while the rupees keep coming.

Things to remember

A flat rate is easy to model but rarely the whole plan: tiered slabs, caps and clawbacks shift the real number. Use the effective rate to compare two offers on equal footing, then read the fine print for targets, payment delays and return terms. The best structure is one whose maths you can reproduce on a napkin.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is commission calculated on sales?

Commission is the sales amount multiplied by the commission rate and divided by 100. Selling ₹50,000 at a 5% rate earns 50,000 × 5 ÷ 100 = ₹2,500. Add any fixed incentive the plan promises to get the total payout for the period.

What is the difference between commission and incentive?

Commission scales with what you sell — a percentage of every rupee of revenue. An incentive is typically a flat amount tied to a milestone: a ₹2,500 joining bonus or a monthly target reward. Commission rewards volume; incentives reward specific outcomes.

How does a tiered commission scheme work?

Tiered plans pay different rates on different slabs of sales — say 3% up to ₹50,000 and 5% above it. Work each slab with the flat-rate formula and add the pieces; the effective rate on this page then shows what the blended structure really pays across a full month.

Is commission income taxable in India?

Yes. Commission is business or professional income and is declared accordingly, with TDS often deducted at source on large payments. Keep the statements your payer issues, because they back the figures you report in your return.
