Mileage Calculator
Fuel economy wears three costumes depending on who quotes it: Indian dashboards speak kilometres per litre, European cars display litres per 100 kilometres, and American stickers insist on miles per gallon. The fact underneath is one number — how far a vehicle travels on a fixed amount of fuel — and this calculator translates it into whichever language you need. Two inputs from a fill-up give you all three units.

How is the Mileage calculated?
Enter the distance you covered — one tank's worth from a full-to-full fill-up gives the cleanest reading — and the fuel you put in, in litres. The calculator divides distance by fuel for kilometres per litre, then reports the same efficiency as litres per 100 kilometres and US mpg. No price input appears here on purpose: cost belongs to the fuel-cost calculator, and keeping the two apart means this page works identically in Delhi, Berlin or Detroit.
Formula
km/L = distance (km) ÷ fuel (litres) L/100 km = 100 ÷ (km/L) US mpg = km/L × 3.785411784 ÷ 1.609344 ≈ km/L × 2.3521 Litres per 100 km runs opposite to km/L: lower is better there, higher is better on km/L, which is exactly why test-drive brochures can quote both without lying.
Example
Distance: 450 km · Fuel used: 40 litres Mileage = 450 ÷ 40 = 11.25 km per litre Consumption = 100 ÷ 11.25 ≈ 8.89 litres per 100 km US economy = 11.25 × 2.3521 ≈ 26.46 mpg A hatchback covering 320 km on 25 litres scores 12.8 km/L — that is 7.81 L/100 km and 30.11 mpg: one vehicle, three vocabularies.
Things to remember
Real-world mileage drifts from brochure figures with traffic, tyre pressure, air-conditioning and load, so measure a full tank more than once before judging a vehicle. Take the km/L figure next door to the fuel-cost calculator for running costs; use mpg or L/100 km for cross-border comparisons.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my vehicle's mileage manually?
Fill the tank completely, reset the trip meter, drive normally until the tank is nearly empty, then refill fully and note the litres this second fill takes. Divide the trip distance by those litres: 450 km on 40 litres is 450 ÷ 40 = 11.25 km per litre, the full-to-full method most owners trust.
What is the difference between km/L and L/100 km?
They are reciprocals. Km/L counts distance per unit of fuel — higher is better — while L/100 km counts fuel per fixed distance — lower is better. 11.25 km/L equals 8.89 L/100 km because 100 ÷ 11.25 = 8.89; the numbers point in opposite directions by design.
How do I convert km per litre to US mpg?
Multiply kilometres per litre by about 2.3521. The exact factor is 3.785411784 litres per US gallon divided by 1.609344 km per mile. So 11.25 km/L becomes roughly 26.46 US mpg, while imperial gallons used in the UK run about 20% higher again.
Why is my real mileage lower than the brochure?
Brochure figures come from controlled lab cycles. City stop-start traffic, aggressive acceleration, under-inflated tyres, a roof rack and long idling each push consumption up, and together they commonly cost 10–25% against the advertised number. Measure several full tanks to get your vehicle's true average.
