Final Exam Calculator
Every course with a weighted final poses the same question at the end of term: what do I need on the exam to finish with the grade I want? The answer is a weighted average solved backwards, but the branches matter — sometimes the goal is already banked, sometimes no score can reach it. This calculator gives the required score and brackets it with the best and worst outcomes, so you decide on numbers, not nerves.

How is the Final Exam calculated?
Enter the overall grade you hold before the final, the percentage weight the final carries, and the overall grade you want. The calculator solves the weighted-average equation for the final's score and also reports the ceiling — what you finish with if you ace the exam — and the floor that a zero would leave behind. A required score above 100% is flagged as out of reach; one below zero is reported as already secured.
Formula
required = (desired − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight where: current = overall grade before the final, in percent weight = the final's share of the course grade as a decimal (30% → 0.30) desired = the overall grade you want to finish with best possible = current × (1 − weight) + weight × 100 floor = current × (1 − weight)
Example
Current grade: 72% · Final weight: 30% · Desired: 80% Carried share = 72 × 0.70 = 50.4 Gap to close = 80 − 50.4 = 29.6 Required on the final = 29.6 ÷ 0.30 = 98.67% Even 100% on the final caps the course at 80.4%, so the target is possible but only just; a zero would drag the overall down to 50.4%.
Things to remember
A required score near 100% means the target grade was effectively decided weeks before the exam — useful to know while you can still change tactics. Weigh the effort against what the grade is worth, check whether the course drops a lowest score instead, and treat the floor figure as the honest cost of not showing up.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate what I need on my final?
Take the grade you want, subtract what you have already secured (current grade times the share the final does not cover), and divide by the final's weight. Wanting 80% with 72% banked and a 30% final means (80 − 50.4) ÷ 0.30 = 98.67% on the exam.
What if the calculator says the grade is out of reach?
A required score above 100% means the target is mathematically impossible: even a perfect exam cannot close the gap. The best-possible row then shows the ceiling you can still reach, which is the honest target to aim for instead.
Can I still fail if I have 72 percent now?
If the final carries enough weight, yes. The floor row answers it exactly: with a 30% final, a current 72% leaves 50.4% overall if you score zero — above a pass in most systems, but far below the 80% you may have been assuming.
How does a 50% weighted final change things?
Weight splits the course evenly, so the final counts as much as everything before it. The required score then equals the average of your desired grade and your current one — 76% for a 72% holder chasing 80% — making it the most leveraged single exam in most courses.
