Grade Calculator

A percentage is arithmetic; a grade is a policy. The same 84% is an A2 under India's CBSE scheme and a B under common US cut-offs, because boards decide where the band boundaries sit. This calculator turns marks into a percentage first, places that percentage in the bands of the scale you choose, and — usefully — reports exactly how many more marks the next band would take.

How is the Grade calculated?

Enter the marks you scored, the total marks the paper carried, and the grading scale: CBSE bands from A1 down to E, or US letter grades from A down to F. The calculator divides obtained by total for the percentage, looks up the band that percentage falls in, and then works out the marks still needed to reach the next band — rounding the threshold up, since 45.5 out of 50 is not yet 91%.

Formula

percentage = marks obtained ÷ total marks × 100

CBSE bands: A1 ≥ 91, A2 81–90, B1 71–80, B2 61–70, C1 51–60, C2 41–50, D 33–40, E below 33.
US bands: A ≥ 90, B ≥ 80, C ≥ 70, D ≥ 60, F below 60.

marks needed = ceil(total × next band threshold ÷ 100) − marks obtained.

Example

Marks: 42 out of 50 · Scale: CBSE
Percentage = 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84% → grade A2
Next band: A1 begins at 91%, which is 45.5 marks — rounded up to 46
You need 46 − 42 = 4 more marks out of 50 to reach A1.
The same 84% under US cut-offs reads as a B; there the A threshold of 90% demands 45 marks, so only 3 more.

Things to remember

Bands are conventions, not laws: schools add plus/minus modifiers, internal assessments shift totals, and boards revisit thresholds. Use this page to see where a percentage lands on a named scale and what the next rung costs — then confirm the exact scheme your school follows before planning around a single boundary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grade is 84 percent in CBSE?

On the CBSE scheme, 84% falls in the A2 band, which covers 81–90%. A1 starts at 91%, so 84% sits mid-band; out of 50 marks that means scoring 42, with four more marks buying the A1 grade.

How do I convert marks into a grade?

Divide the marks obtained by the total and multiply by 100 to get the percentage, then read it against the band table for your board. This calculator does both steps and names the scale, since CBSE and US letter grades assign the same percentage different letters.

What marks are needed for A1 in CBSE?

A1 needs 91% or above. Out of 50 marks that is 46 — 45.5 rounded up; out of 100, exactly 91. Enter your own total above and the calculator computes the precise gap from wherever you currently stand.

Is 75 percent a good score in Indian boards?

75% clears most undergraduate cut-offs and earns a B1 under CBSE bands, though competitive entrances weigh it differently. Trend matters too: improvement across terms can matter more to admissions than a single term's band.
