Average Calculator
The average — the arithmetic mean — is the single number that stands in for a list: test scores, sensor readings, monthly figures. It is also easy to get subtly wrong when a list is shorter than it looks. This calculator takes up to five values, counts only the fields you actually filled in, and reports count, sum and mean together so the denominator is never a mystery.

How is the Average calculated?
Five fields, A to E, hold your numbers. A field left at 0 is treated as empty and skipped, which makes the default set of 84, 76, 91, 79 and 0 really four values. The results show how many fields were counted, their sum, and the mean itself: sum divided by count. When every field is 0 there is nothing to divide by, so the average appears as a dash.
Formula
Mean = sum of the values ÷ number of values counted. Values equal to 0 drop out of both the sum and the count, so the denominator always matches the numbers you supplied. With 84 + 76 + 91 + 79 = 330 across 4 values, the mean is 330 ÷ 4 = 82.5. Median and mode are two different summaries of the same list.
Example
Four quiz scores — 84, 76, 91 and 79 — with the fifth field left blank. The sum is 84 + 76 + 91 + 79 = 330 and the count is 4, so the mean is 330 ÷ 4 = 82.5. Now enter a fifth score of 65: the sum climbs to 395 across 5 values and the average falls to 395 ÷ 5 = 79, which is why the count row belongs beside every mean.
Things to remember
An average describes the middle of a list, not its shape: 82.5 could come from four scores clustered tightly or from two high results balancing two poor ones. Read the spread before acting on the mean, and remember that a zero is indistinguishable from an empty field here — adjust the other scores if one must count.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate the average of four numbers?
Add them together and divide by four. Scores of 84, 76, 91 and 79 total 330, and 330 ÷ 4 = 82.5. The calculator performs both steps and shows the count it used, so you can always see which numbers went into the final division.
Why does this calculator skip zeros?
A field left at 0 usually means it was never filled in, and counting it would drag the result down by treating an empty slot as a real zero. If a zero genuinely belongs in the list, change the surrounding scores instead — the count row always shows what was included.
What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
The mean adds everything and divides; the median is the middle value once the list is sorted; the mode is the number appearing most often. They agree when a list spreads evenly and part company quickly when one extreme value pulls the mean towards it.
How do you average two averages correctly?
Weight each one by how many observations it summarises instead of mixing them with plain division. Class averages of 80 and 85 from 30 and 20 students give (80×30 + 85×20) ÷ 50 = 82, and the weighted average calculator performs that sum for you.
