Advance Tax Calculator

Advance tax is tax paid during the year rather than in one lump sum at filing, and it applies whenever your liability after TDS crosses ₹10,000. Businesses, freelancers and salaried people with rent or consulting income all land in this net. Miss the schedule and interest starts accruing, so the useful question is simply how much goes out on each of the four dates.

How is the Advance Tax calculated?

Enter the tax you expect for the financial year and subtract the TDS already cut from salary, rent or interest — the calculator does the subtraction for you. What remains is spread across the four statutory instalments: 15% by 15 June, 45% cumulative by 15 September, 75% by 15 December and the balance by 15 March. If TDS already covers the bill, every instalment reads zero.

Formula

Advance tax = estimated total tax − TDS. Instalment k = advance payable × (cumulative% of k − cumulative% of k−1), where the cumulative percentages are 15, 45, 75 and 100 under section 211 for FY 2025-26.

Example

A freelancer expects ₹1,20,000 of tax for FY 2025-26 with ₹20,000 already deducted as TDS. Advance payable is ₹1,00,000, so ₹15,000 goes out by 15 June, ₹30,000 by 15 September, ₹30,000 by 15 December and ₹25,000 by 15 March. Those dates carry cumulative targets as well: the year's advance must reach ₹45,000 by 15 September and ₹75,000 by 15 December, which is why the closing instalment is only ₹25,000.

Things to remember

A shortfall invites interest under section 234C on each late instalment and section 234B if less than 90% of your tax is paid by year end, charged at 1% a month. Due dates and slabs here follow FY 2025-26, so check the latest budget before filing your return.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who has to pay advance tax in India?

Anyone whose tax liability, after TDS, is ₹10,000 or more for the year. Salaried employees whose employer deducts enough TDS are usually exempt, while traders, freelancers, professionals and landlords with sizable non-TDS income must pay it.

What happens if I miss an instalment?

Interest runs under section 234C at 1% a month on the shortfall for that period, and section 234B adds 1% a month if less than 90% of the year's tax is paid by 31 March. Paying the missed amount at the next due date limits the damage quickly.

Is advance tax the same as self-assessment tax?

No. Advance tax is paid through the year on the four section 211 dates, while self-assessment tax is paid after the year closes but before you submit the return. Anything still unpaid after 31 March attracts the higher interest under section 234A.

How do I actually pay an advance tax instalment?

Use challan 280 on the income tax portal or at a bank, quoting the assessment year and the date of the instalment. Keep the challan receipt: those challan numbers are what you or your chartered accountant books the credit against while filing.
