Retirement Corpus Calculator
A retirement corpus is the pot that must cover every month of your life after the last salary. Size it wrongly and either today's saving or tomorrow's lifestyle pays the price. Inflation is the multiplier most plans miss: at 6% a year, today's ₹40,000 costs twice that three decades out. This calculator inflates your current spending into retirement rupees and finds the monthly investment that bridges the gap.

How is the Retirement Corpus calculated?
Enter your current age, the age you plan to retire, what your household spends monthly today, and any retirement savings already set aside — EPF, PPF, NPS and the rest. Set inflation, the return your investments earn until retirement, and the years the corpus must last. You get the inflated expense at retirement, the corpus required, the future value of today's savings, and the monthly investment that closes the gap. The chart plots your expense in future rupees so inflation stays visible.
Formula
E = E₀ × (1 + i)^n corpus = E × 12 × d monthly = gap × m ÷ ((1 + m)^k − 1) where: E₀ = monthly expense today · i = inflation · n = years to retirement d = years in retirement · gap = corpus − savings × (1 + r)^n m = expected return ÷ 12 · k = n × 12 months The corpus preserves capital and assumes no returns during retirement.
Example
Age today: 30 · Retiring at: 60 · Monthly expense: ₹40,000 · Inflation: 6% · Return: 9% Expense at retirement = 40,000 × 1.06^30 ≈ ₹2,29,739.65 a month Corpus needed = 2,29,739.65 × 12 × 25 years ≈ ₹6,89,21,894 Existing savings of ₹5,00,000 grow at 9% to about ₹66,33,839, leaving a gap of ₹6,22,88,055 Closing it needs roughly ₹34,023 a month for 30 years. At 0% inflation the corpus falls to ₹1,20,00,000 — over ₹5.6 crore of the target is pure inflation.
Things to remember
This corpus is deliberately conservative: it earns nothing once you retire, so any real return becomes safety margin rather than dependency. Revisit it yearly — expenses, inflation and markets all move, and an early gap is the cheap kind to close. The return used here is an estimate, not a guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much corpus do I need to retire in India?
A common rule is 25–30 times your annual expenses, but inflation decides the real number. At 6% inflation, ₹40,000 of monthly spending today needs a corpus near ₹6.9 crore if you retire in 30 years and plan for 25 years of retirement — this calculator computes that figure for your own inputs.
Why does inflation matter so much in retirement planning?
Because retirement spending compounds in the wrong direction: your expense grows with inflation for every year you are still working, then keeps growing through retirement. At 6% a year, money buys half as much in roughly twelve years, which is why a corpus sized on today's expenses fails quietly and late.
What return should I assume before retirement?
A blended 8–10% is a common planning assumption in India for a mix leaning toward equity, while 5–6% reflects a debt-heavy portfolio. Lower the rate to stress-test the plan: if the numbers still work at 6%, the corpus has genuine margin against market cycles.
Does this corpus account for taxes and medical costs?
No — it covers lifestyle expenses only, inflated. Add a separate medical buffer, ideally a health cover plus an emergency fund, and remember withdrawals from many instruments are taxed at your then-slab rate. Rules change, so verify current treatment with a SEBI-registered adviser.
