In-Hand to CTC Calculator

Offers quote CTC, but employees live on in-hand pay, and moving between the two directions is where confusion starts. A colleague who says they earn ₹1,00,000 a month may be sitting on a CTC of ₹12.5 lakh or ₹14 lakh depending on PF and tax. This page runs the payroll backwards — from the bank credit to the cost-to-company figure — using the forward calculator's own assumptions, so both directions always agree.

How is the In-Hand to CTC calculated?

Type the monthly in-hand amount you want to understand, then match the structure: basic as a percentage of CTC (40% by default), PF on the ₹15,000 statutory ceiling or on full basic, whether new-regime income tax should be deducted, and the monthly professional tax for your state. The engine starts from the take-home figure itself and closes the gap in a few rounds until net pay matches your target exactly.

Formula

Forward, net = gross − employee PF − professional tax − tax, where gross = CTC − employer PF. To reverse it we iterate CTC += target annual take-home − net(CTC) until the gap is zero — net pay grows by 45–100 paise per rupee of CTC, so it closes fast. Where the ₹12,00,000 rebate cliff makes two CTCs pay the same in-hand, the lower one is reported.

Example

You take home ₹1,00,000 a month with basic at 40%, PF on the ₹15,000 ceiling, ₹200 professional tax and new-regime tax. Annual take-home needed is ₹12,00,000. PF costs ₹21,600 as employee and ₹21,600 as employer, professional tax ₹2,400, and the gross of ₹12,24,000 leaves taxable income of ₹11,49,000 — under the ₹12 lakh rebate, so tax is nil. Add it all up and the required CTC is ₹12,45,600.

Things to remember

Use the figure to sanity-check any offer that quotes only in-hand, or to translate a current salary before negotiating. The direction is sensitive to structure: switching PF onto full basic or moving into a taxed slab shifts the CTC you need. Re-run it with the settings from the letter when the stakes are real.

Frequently Asked Questions

What CTC do I need for ₹1 lakh in-hand per month?

With basic at 40%, PF capped at ₹15,000, ₹200 professional tax and nil new-regime tax, ₹1,00,000 in hand requires a CTC of ₹12,45,600. PF on full basic or a slab that starts charging tax will push the required CTC higher — enter your own settings above to see by how much.

Why is CTC more than twelve times my in-hand?

Three leaks sit between them: employee PF and professional tax come out of gross, income tax comes out next, and employer PF is inside the CTC but never paid to you. Together they typically consume 15–25% of CTC when PF is capped, more once income tax applies.

Does this calculation include employer PF?

Yes. The employer's 12% is treated as part of the CTC and subtracted before your deductions, exactly as the forward calculator does. That is why the gross monthly figure here is lower than CTC ÷ 12 even before anything is deducted.

What changes if PF is on my full basic?

Employee and employer PF both jump from ₹1,800 a month to 12% of your actual basic, so gross falls and the CTC needed for the same in-hand rises. On ₹1 lakh in-hand the effect runs into tens of thousands of rupees of CTC a year — the select above recalculates it instantly.
