Overtime Pay Calculator

Overtime is where hourly work gets paid differently from the rest of the week, and where disputes usually start. A shift that was quoted as 'double time' becomes a spreadsheet argument in March, and a salaried employee asked to cover a weekend rarely knows what those hours are worth. This calculator prices premium hours explicitly: rate, hours and multiplier in, overtime pay and effective rate out.

How is the Overtime Pay calculated?

Enter your regular hourly rate, the straight-time hours you worked this period and the overtime hours on top. Choose the multiplier your contract or standing orders use — 1×, 1.5×, 2× or 2.5×. The page returns overtime pay as the headline, straight-time pay, total for the period, and the blended hourly rate that the whole check really worked out to.

Formula

Straight pay = hourly rate × straight-time hours. Overtime pay = hourly rate × overtime hours × multiplier. Total = straight pay + overtime pay. Effective rate = total ÷ all hours worked. The multiplier is the contracted premium — 1.5× adds half again, 2× doubles it — and the Factories Act 1948 mandates twice the ordinary rate for factory workers.

Example

At ₹500 an hour, 40 straight hours pay ₹20,000. Ten overtime hours at the common 1.5× rate pay 500 × 10 × 1.5 = ₹7,500, so the period totals ₹27,500 across 50 hours — an effective ₹550 an hour. Shift the overtime to 2× and those same ten hours pay ₹10,000, lifting the total to ₹30,000 and the effective rate to ₹600.

Things to remember

Check the multiplier against your appointment letter or standing orders before accepting a timesheet — the difference between 1.5× and 2× on ten hours is ₹2,500 a period here. Overtime is taxable salary that follows your slab, and your base hourly rate comes from the hourly-wage page if the package is annual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is overtime 1.5 times or 2 times in India?

It depends on the job. The Factories Act 1948 pays factory workers twice the ordinary rate for overtime; private IT and office contracts commonly use 1.5×; night or festival shifts sometimes reach 2.5×. Enter the multiplier your own contract states.

What counts as straight-time hours?

Hours paid at your ordinary rate before any premium — a standard 40-hour week for most salaried staff. Anything beyond your contracted daily or weekly hours is overtime and should be entered on the overtime line with its multiplier.

Is overtime salary taxable in India?

Yes. Overtime is part of salary income and is taxed at your slab rate along with the rest, with PF applicable on PF wages if your establishment covers you. The income-tax calculator shows the slab impact of a heavy overtime month.

How do I find my hourly rate from an annual salary?

Divide the annual figure by hours per week times weeks per year: a ₹12,00,000 package over 40 × 52 hours is ₹576.92 an hour. The hourly-wage page does this conversion, then you can bring the result here to price extra hours.
