Financial Year Calculator
India's financial year runs from 1 April to 31 March, and nearly every tax deadline hangs off it — returns, advance tax and TDS challans all speak in financial years, not calendar ones. A date in January, February or March belongs to the year that started the previous April, which is exactly why 'which FY am I in?' deserves a precise answer. Enter any date for its FY, its quarter and the days each has left.

How is the Financial Year calculated?
Enter the day, month and year you are checking. The calculator places the date in the Indian financial year — 1 April to 31 March — labels it the way the Income Tax Department does, for example 2026–27, and reports how many days are left in the year, counting the date itself. It also names the quarter the date falls in — Q1 April to June through Q4 January to March — with the days remaining in that quarter, which is what quarterly planning actually needs.
Formula
FY start year = year, if the month is April or later; otherwise year − 1 FY label = start year – following year days remaining = (31 March of the following year − date) + 1 Quarters: Q1 April–June, Q2 July–September, Q3 October–December, Q4 January–March. Both day counts include the date itself, so the last day of any period reports 1.
Example
Date: 24 October 2026 Financial year: 2026–27, running 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 Days remaining in the FY: 159 Quarter: Q3 (October–December) — 69 days left in it Move the date to 15 January 2027 and the FY label does not change — January still sits inside 2026–27 — while the quarter becomes Q4 with 76 days remaining. On 1 April 2026 a fresh FY opens with all 365 days ahead.
Things to remember
Advance tax instalments fall due on 15 June, 15 September, 15 December and 15 March, so the quarter view is more than trivia — it shows how close the next deadline sits. Tax rules shift with Finance Act changes, so confirm the current schedule with your CA or the portal before acting on any date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which financial year does January fall in?
January sits in the financial year that began the previous April. A date of 20 January 2027 belongs to FY 2026–27, which runs 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 — the same year your February and March income is filed under.
What is the financial year in India?
India's financial year runs 1 April to 31 March and is named by its starting year, so FY 2026–27 covers 1 April 2026 through 31 March 2027. The assessment year that follows is when that income is actually assessed and taxed.
How many quarters are in a financial year?
Four: Q1 April to June, Q2 July to September, Q3 October to December and Q4 January to March. Advance tax is due in four instalments aligned to these quarters, on 15 June, 15 September, 15 December and 15 March each year.
Why does the financial year end on 31 March?
The government set 31 March so the accounting year ends a quarter before the calendar year, leaving April onward to compile accounts and file returns. March salaries are typically paid in April, and the books close on the 31st.
