Working Days Calculator

Contracts, SLAs, notice periods and project plans all run on working days, not calendar days. This calculator counts Monday–Friday between two dates (inclusive of both ends), shows the total calendar days and weekend days, and lets you subtract a number of public holidays for a net working-day figure.

How is the Working Days calculated?

Enter the start date (day, month, year) and end date. Enter the number of public holidays that fall on weekdays within the range (the calculator does not know specific holiday calendars — you supply the count). The result shows working days excluding weekends and the holidays you entered, total calendar days inclusive, and the number of weekend days. The end date is inclusive.

Formula

Total days = end date − start date + 1 (inclusive). Weekend days = count of Saturdays and Sundays in the range. Working days = total days − weekend days − public holidays (minimum 0). All dates evaluated in UTC.

Example

Start 1 January 2024 (Monday), end 31 December 2024 (Tuesday), 0 public holidays: total days = 366, weekend days = 104, working days = 262. With 10 public holidays: working days = 252. A shorter span, start 15 August 2024 (Thursday) to end 20 October 2024 (Sunday): total days = 67, weekend days = 20, working days = 47. Start 1 Jan 2024, end 5 Jan 2024 (Friday): total days = 5, weekend days = 0, working days = 5.

Things to remember

For precise planning, look up your country's or company's actual holiday calendar and enter the count. The end date is inclusive — if your contract uses exclusive end dates, subtract one from the total days. For shift patterns beyond Mon–Fri, this calculator is not a substitute for a roster tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the calculator include the start and end dates?

Yes — both the start date and the end date are included in the count. If you need an exclusive range, subtract one from the total days and adjust the working days accordingly.

How do I account for public holidays?

Count the public holidays that fall on weekdays (Mon–Fri) within your date range and enter that number. The calculator subtracts them from the working-day total. It does not know specific holiday dates.

What if a public holiday falls on a weekend?

Weekend holidays are already excluded as weekend days, so do not count them in the public-holidays input. Only count holidays that would otherwise be working days.

Can I use this for a notice period?

Yes — many notice periods are defined in working days. Enter the start date (day after notice given) and the end date (last working day), and subtract any gazetted holidays in between.
