Birth Year Calculator
People often know their age and birth month/day but need the birth year — for forms, genealogy, or curiosity. This calculator reverses the usual age calculation: give your current age and the month/day of birth, and it returns the birth year. If your birthday has already occurred this year the answer is exact; if not, it gives the two possible years.

How is the Birth Year calculated?
Enter your age in years, the day and month of birth. The calculator uses the current year (UTC) and checks whether the birth month/day has passed. If yes, birth year = current year − age. If not, the birth year could be current year − age or one year earlier — both are shown. Leap-day births (29 February) use 28 February as the reference in non-leap years.
Formula
Let current year = Y, age = A, birth month/day = M/D. If M/D has occurred in year Y: birth year = Y − A (exact). Else: birth year = Y − A or Y − A − 1 (range). The check uses UTC today. For 29 Feb in non-leap years, M/D is treated as 28 Feb.
Example
Age 30, born 15 August, checked 20 October 2024: birthday passed, exact birth year 1994. Same age and birth date checked 1 January 2024: birthday not yet passed, so the calculator returns the range 1993 or 1994. Checked on 15 August 2024, the birthday itself, the answer resolves to the exact year 1994. Age 45, born 3 December, checked 20 October 2024: still to come this year, so the year is 1978 or 1979.
Things to remember
When the result is a range, the true year is the earlier one if you have not yet had your birthday this year. For official documents, use the exact year once your birthday passes. The calculator updates automatically each day, so re-check after your birthday for the precise figure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the calculator sometimes give two years?
If your birthday has not happened yet this year, you could have been born in the current year minus your age (if born late in the year) or one year earlier (if born early in the year). Both are possible until your birthday passes.
What if I was born on 29 February?
In non-leap years the calculator treats 28 February as the reference date for the 'has birthday passed' check, so the logic still works correctly.
Can I use this for historical ages?
The calculator uses the current year as the reference. For a historical reference year, use the date-difference calculator with the known date and the age in days.
Is the result guaranteed to be correct?
It is correct for the age you enter. If the age itself is wrong (e.g. you rounded), the birth year will be off by one. Always use the exact age at last birthday.
