Countdown Calculator

A countdown turns a future deadline into a daily motivator — whether it is a product launch, a vacation, a certificate expiry or a personal goal. This calculator shows the days remaining (or elapsed if the date has passed), the approximate hours and minutes, and the weekday the target falls on. It uses today's date as the starting point.

How is the Countdown calculated?

Enter the target day, month and year. The calculator compares it with today (UTC). If the target is in the future, days remaining is positive; if in the past, it is negative (shown as 'days since'). Hours and minutes are simple multiples (days × 24, days × 1440). The weekday is the Gregorian weekday of the target date.

Formula

Days remaining = target date − today (exclusive, UTC). Hours ≈ days × 24. Minutes ≈ days × 1440. Weekday = Gregorian weekday of target date. Negative days mean the date has passed.

Example

Target 31 December 2025, checked 1 January 2025: days remaining = 364, hours ≈ 8,736, minutes ≈ 524,160, weekday = Wednesday. Target 15 October 2024, checked 10 October 2024: days remaining = 5, hours ≈ 120, weekday = Tuesday. Target 1 January 2024, checked 31 December 2024: days since = 365, weekday = Monday.

Things to remember

Use the days figure for planning; hours and minutes are approximate (they assume exactly 24h per day). For a precise hour/minute countdown, combine with the time-duration calculator using a specific target time. The weekday helps you anticipate whether the target falls on a weekend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are hours and minutes approximate?

They are derived from the whole-day count (days × 24, days × 1440). A true hour countdown would need a specific target time and would change every minute. This calculator is designed for day-level planning.

What does a negative number mean?

The target date has already passed. The absolute value is the number of days since that date, so '-12' simply means the target was 12 days ago. Treat the figure as a 'days since' marker rather than a countdown.

Can I set a specific time of day?

This calculator works at day granularity only. For a specific time, use the time-duration calculator with the target time as the end point and now as the start point.

Does it account for leap years?

Yes — the day count uses actual calendar days, including 29 February in leap years, so a span that crosses a leap day picks up that extra day and the result stays exact in days.
